The Waseda Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies and The Waseda Institute of Asian Migrations are jointly organizing the international symposium “Democratizing International Student Mobility.” This symposium aims to examine international student mobility in the contemporary era with a specific focus on the issue of inequality and the practices and experiences related to the possibility of democratization of international education.

A mini-symposium (in-person and online) with Dr. An Huy Tran (Bielefeld University), Dr. Sebastian Rumsby (Queen Mary University of London) and Dr. Aimi Nakamura (Duisburg-Essen University) on Vietnamese migration workers.

Through personal narratives told by Indian migrant women, we examine past, present and future expectations and see how these affect their roles as Indian women, wives, mothers, and workers in a foreign country, as well as the challenges they faced in ‘Finding their Niche’.

A talk by Professor Patrick Le Galès (Sciences Po)

Method of differentiation has profound consequences, including the widespread mental stress that young people face in China, Japan, and other parts of the world today. In this conversation, participants are invited to share their personal experiences and observations about this phenomenon.

The talk will feature Dr. Helena Hof's latest publication "The EU Migrant Generation in Asia: Middle-Class Aspirations in Asian Global Cities"

Dr. Beatrice Zani will have a talk titled "Women Migrants, Emotions, and Digital Entrepreneurship between China and Taiwan." The event is co-sponsored by the Waseda Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies.

Dr. Diego Acosta (University of Bristol) will have a talk titled "Removing walls and fences in the 21st century. Towards a new paradigm of borders, free movement, and people?" The event is co-sponsored by The Global Asia Research Center.

Jocelyn O. Celero (Asian Center, University of the Philippines-Diliman) will have a talk titled "Intergenerational Intimacies and Mobilities in Transnational Families: The Experiences of Japanese-Filipino Children." The event is co-sponsored by the Waseda Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies.

Prof. David Slater (Sophia University) and Rosa Barbaran will have a talk with film clips titled "Hustle, abuse and making ends meet: work in Tokyo as a refugee asylum seeker." The event is co-sponsored by the Waseda Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies.

The talk titled "How do Japanese immigration authorities exercise 'Administrative discretion' over undocumented foreigners? – the reality of detention facilities" by Journalist Yugo Hirano (Kyodo News Agency) will be postponed due to the speaker's availability. We will announce the new date and time once they are decided.
