Prof Dr Dêlidji Eric DEGILA (Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies)
Professor Degila’s research interests range from international politics to migration governance, African
peace and security challenges, and health issues in the Global South. A political scientist and lawyer, he
combines rigorous transdisciplinary analysis and policymaking perspective with the purpose to study
complex dynamics that shape the praxis along his lines of research. He is conducting a long-term project
on the role of African states in contemporary global governance from the International Geneva. He was
a Visiting Professor of African politics at Singapore Management University (SMU). He has also given
lectures at Universidad National Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM), Institut des Etudes Africaines of
Mohamed V University in Morocco, Universidad del Salvador at Buenos Aires in Argentina,
Ritsumeikan and Waseda universities in Japan, Université d’Abomey-Calavi of Benin among others.
Professor Degila is active in several academic organizations including the International Studies
Association and is the past Chair of its Global South Caucus. He serves as member of several advisory
boards on a global scale, and advises governments and international organizations such as the African
Union, l’Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, West African Economic and Monetary Union
and the United Nations. Native from Benin and trained as diplomat at ENA - National School of
Administration - he received a doctorate in Political Science/International Relations from Jean Moulin
University in France. His latest book, with Valeria M. Valle, discusses migration governance from
Global Souths and put emphasis on human mobility as a driver for development and social progress.
Abstract:
This book lecture will explore migration governance by providing perspectives from the global South(s). Based on the book structure, it will focus on the challenges and opportunities of governing migration on multiple levels: the subnational, national, regional and international. It will discuss existing and new migration policies and frameworks in terms of their successes and best practices, and put a particular emphasis on the rise of nationalism and an increase in xenophobia, as well as challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
